The forests of Northern Wisconsin are a playground for visitors from all over the Midwest. What kind of activities are available and what is Wisconsin's Northwoods?
Wisconsin's Northwoods is the heavily forested northern section of the state that caters to tourists looking to relax in nature. The region is generally considered that above Highway 8, including Hayward, Ashland, and Minocqua. The northern portion of the state is sparsely populated and offers an abundant amount of recreational activities. For an idea of what to do on your next Northwoods vacation, explore some of the options below.
- Visit a state park, state forest, or national forest. There are acres and acres of unspoiled beauty in the Northwoods.
- Island hop at Apostle Island National Lakeshore. Seakayaking is a popular activity among the islands for viewing sea caves.
- Hiking and biking trails provide heart healthy fun. Try the Ice Age Trail or North Country Trail. Or...
- Get 'er done with an ATV or snowmobile on designated trails.
- Snowshoeing or skiing, both crosscountry and down hill, are popular in the winter.
- Nature watching includes birds, wildflowers, and mammals of all sizes, from elusive fishers to black bears to wolves.
- Waterfalls are best in spring but beautiful all year, and the Northwoods is filled with them. Copper Falls State Park has trails and bridges along the Bad River and its many falls.

- Go boating or canoeing - bring your own in or rent from one of the many outfitters in the area.
- Take your chances at a casino. Many Indian reservations are found in the Northwoods and casinos speckle the area.
- Hunting is always in season here. Check out the DNR web site and find what animal or fowl is in season today!
- Shopping, shopping, and more shopping!
- Antique stores are scattered all along roadsides. Who knows what treasures you might find.
- Dining opportunities are endless. From fine dining to old-fashioned drive-ins to combo brewery/restaurants, there is something for every palate.
This is only the start of the activities available. It is hard to be still in the Northwoods, unless you choose to relax and sit quietly with a book by a stream. Otherwise go get biking, stargaze under the dark Northwoods sky, visit a museum, take the kids minigolfing ... the choice is up to you.
The Northwoods provides year-round activities and accommodations. You can visit Northern Wisconsin every year and make a tradition of your favorite activities or find something new each time.
