Lake Geneva is a highly popular resort town in southeastern Wisconsin that is a year around destination. On the first weekend of February the city will fill with people enjoying the winter beauty of the area and the snow scenes in the countryside. On February 4 – 8, 2009 Lake Geneva will host Winterfest and the U.S. National Snow Sculpting Competition.

U.S, National Snow Sculpting Competition

Since 1996, the nation’s top snow sculptors have packed their hand tools and headed to southeastern Wisconsin to compete in the nation’s premier snow sculpting competition – the U.S. National Snow Sculpting Championship. The competition matches 15 teams from as far away as Alaska as they create intricate pieces of art from three-ton, 10-foot-high cylinders of snow.

The event is truly a love affair for the participants as the team’s labor for three days and nights in harsh temperatures to compete in a competition offering glory and bragging rights. The U.S. National Snow Sculpting Championship offers no cash prizes, only the chance to be proclaimed the best by their peers.

Each year an estimated 30,000 see the competition as teams from throughout the country vie for the national title. Each team of three members spends three dyas carving a work of art out of a 6’ x 6’ x 10’ block of snow.

If weather permits the competitors will be on site from 9 am to 1 pm and 2 pm until dark. Spectators get a chance to work on sample blocks of snow and to vote on the “Peoples’ Choice” sculpture award.

Winterfest

Winterfest festivities include snow sculpting, children’s activities, music, helicopter rides and horse drawn carriage rides.

The Winterfest Road Race Series are 5K and 10K road races in and around the Lake Geneva area. Registration begins at 8 am on Saturday at Best Western Harbor Shores. The races start at 10 am in downtown Lake Geneva.

Winter Carnival at Grand Geneva Resort

Grand Geneva Resort will host its Winter Carnival on February 7, 2009. The annual carnival is held at the Mountain Top at Grand Geneva. Carnival events include ski school, ski patrol demonstrations, snow boarding competitions, downhill ski competitions, children’s games and snow activities.

On March 20-22 the Grand Geneva Resort will host the Nielsen Enterprises SnoCross Grand Finale Championship Snowmobile Racing, where the World Professional Snowmobile Association Champions will be crowned. The event will be aired nationally on ESPN.
