The Wilderness Resort is one of the biggest water parks in the Dells. While it has a number of large outdoor waterparks, the indoor areas are the focus of most people's attention, due to Wisconsin's long winters and changeable weather.
The Wilderness currently has three indoor water park areas. While this means there are lots of play options, the downside is that the areas are all separate. To get from one to another requires long walks down the hotel's hallways. Keep this in mind if you are booking a room for the night: Level 2 rooms will have more traffic so if you are planning on naps or early bedtimes, request a different floor. As an alternative, there is a shuttle that drives between the different water park areas, but the wait can be long and you'll have to briefly exit the building. Not fun when you're dripping wet and it's freezing out.
The Wild Water Dome is the newest indoor water park at the Wilderness. A huge wave pool is the focus here, with a glassed ceiling. The glass ceiling is great for warmth on sunny days, but beware, you can get a suntan through the glass, so bring your sunscreen. Private cabanas line the back wall; these can be rented and include TVs so you can keep up with the game while the big kids take a dip.
A small portion of the Wild Water Dome is dedicated to kids 48 inches and smaller. This area includes some foamy climbing structures, squirting features and a small slide. Behind this kiddie area are two raft rides. The weight limit is 200 pounds minimum and 800 pounds maximum, which makes it a good choice for the whole family.
Klondike Kavern is currently being remodeled. While portions of the park are occasionally open, such as the lazy river, slides at the back, and the indoor/outdoor hot tub, the whole center of this water park is being reconstructed. During weekdays in 2007-2008 the entire room may be closed during the week. Check with the resort for more information.
This water park is currently the most diverse. A smaller wave pool is tucked into the front, plus a baby play area. In the middle is a large fort-type structure with different levels of slides plus squirt guns, dumping buckets and the like. At the back are slides and tube rides for the big kids. Another good aspect of this park is that it is close to another indoor play area, Dodge'em City and the Northern Lights Arcade. These two dry areas are great options for playing in the morning before the water parks are open or after the kids have dried off for a meal and you're looking for something else to do.
The Wilderness Resort is located on Highway 12 in Lake Delton, just a couple miles off the Interstate. For more information about the entire complex, call 1-800-867-WILD or visit their website at WildernessResort.com.
