Harley-Davidson started with humble beginnings in Milwaukee, Wisconsin in 1903. In 2008 a museum and festival mark the landmark anniversary of the H-D motorcycle.
Harley Davidson celebrates their 105th Anniversary during the summer of 2008. This landmark anniversary will be marked by an anniversary festival in Milwaukee on the Summerfest Grounds and at the Harley-Davidson Museum Grounds on August 28 through 31, 2008. Harley Davidson is opening a museum near downtown Milwaukee in July. Harley-Davidson Museum The first Harley Museum opeedn their doors in Milwaukee on July 12, 2008. The Harley Davidson Museum will be an experience that tells the stories of the people, products, culture and history of the motorcycle company. Groundbreaking on the museum site on Sixth Street and Canal Street near downtown Milwaukee took place in June, 2006. The anticipated museum becomes a reality in July, 2008. H-D Museum ExhibitsHarley Davidson states that their vision is to draw visitors locally and from throughout the world. The museum will celebrate the Harley Davidson history and the passion of the motorcycle riders. Harley anticipates that 350,000 visitors will travel to the 130,000 square foot museum each year. According to the Harley-Davidson website, exhibits at the museum include a collection of over 400 vehicles, Elvis Presley's 1956 Harley Davidson model KH motorcycle, "King Kong," a giant customized Harley, Serial Number One motorcycle from 1903. The Harley Davidson Museum will offer a glimpse into a portion of the Archives which have never before been open to the public. Over 450 motorcycles and hundreds and thousands of artifacts will be exhibited. The museum features a variety of walk through exhibits that tell the story of the people, products history and culture of Harley Davidson. Exhibits include photographs, videos, apparel, rare documents and artifacts. Harley Davidsion OriginsHarley Davidson was started by two young men: William S. Harley and Arthur Davidson. They worked out of a wooden shed with the words "Harley-Davidson Motor Company" scrawled on the door. Henry Meyer of Milwaukee purchased one of the 1903 models directly from the founders on 1903. In 1906 a new factory, measuring 28 x 80 feet, was built on the Chestnut Street site, which was later renamed Juneau Avenue.
